AI assistant integration (MCP)

Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Grok Bot, GitHub Copilot, or any MCP client to your projects with a single URL.

Action Log exposes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server so AI assistants — Claude Desktop, VS Code Copilot, Cursor, the Claude CLI, and any other MCP-compatible client — can read and write your projects and actions on your behalf. The only thing you configure is the server URL; authentication uses your existing Action Log login.

Server URL
https://www.actionlog.app/mcp
How authentication works

On first connection, your AI client opens a browser window to the Action Log login page. Log in as normal and you are redirected back automatically. The client receives a token (valid for 7 days) and re-authenticates silently when it expires. No tokens are stored in your client configuration file.

Available tools

Once connected, your AI assistant has access to the following tools, all scoped to your account and project roles:

  • create_project — create a new project (subject to subscription limits)
  • update_project — edit name, description, dates, meeting cadence, or weekly summary day
  • archive_project — archive a completed project
  • delete_project — soft-delete a project (permanent removal after 30 days; owner only)
  • restore_project — restore an archived or deleted project to active
  • list_projects — all projects you have access to
  • get_project_details — full project with all actions, descriptions, and dependencies
  • get_project_overview — leadership overview with KPIs, AI summary, snapshot stance, and Act-now priorities
  • get_project_actions — filtered action list, paginated by default (pass all=true for full export; staleOnly=true for GoingQuiet actions)
  • list_action_index — minimal “what's open?” index (number, title, status, workstream, target date; staleOnly=true for GoingQuiet actions)
  • get_project_snapshot — latest pulse, workstream phases, delta, and enriched attention items
  • list_project_snapshot_history — paginated snapshot history
  • update_project_pulse — edit pulse text on the latest snapshot
  • capture_project_snapshot — trigger manual snapshot recomputation
  • accept_project_pulse_suggestion — accept AI-suggested pulse text
  • list_project_workstreams — workstreams with standing description, color, owner, critical path, on-scorecard flag, action counts, and tag rules
  • create_workstream — create a named workstream; optional standing description
  • update_workstream — rename, description, color, reorder, tag rules, phase override, owner, critical path, or on scorecard
  • delete_workstream — delete a workstream (owner or editor)
  • assign_action_to_workstream — assign an action by id or number
  • remove_action_from_workstream — unassign an action from its workstream
  • get_workstream_suggestions — unclassified actions with tag-based suggestions
  • get_workstream_summary — one workstream's metadata, RAG, and actions (paginated)
  • get_scorecard — this week's scorecard for workstreams marked on the scorecard (every workstream when none are marked). Pass includeAll=true for the rest. Flagged rows include a prompt when owner, next step, or date is missing
  • merge_workstreams — merge two workstreams (owner or editor)
  • get_integration_mismatches — linked actions where external cached state disagrees with Action Log status; pass includeActivityDrift=true for silent external updates
  • get_action_summary — open / working on it / stuck / done counts
  • get_action_details — full action with updates, dependencies, and linked DevOps / Basecamp / Jira items (actionId alone is enough)
  • search_actions — filter by status, assignee, keyword, or tag
  • create_action — create an action; optionally assign workstream and prerequisites in one call
  • create_actions — create up to 25 actions in one call
  • assign_actions_to_workstream — assign up to 50 actions to a workstream
  • update_actions — batch-update status, target date, or description (up to 25)
  • update_action_description — replace an action description (HTML; plain text auto-wrapped)
  • update_action_target_date — set an action's target (due) date
  • update_action_tags — add, remove, or replace tags on an action
  • update_action_status — change an action's status
  • update_action_color — set or clear an action's palette color
  • update_action_assignees — add, remove, or replace assignees
  • update_action_dependencies — set prerequisite (blocked-by) actions
  • post_update — post a progress update (HTML body)
  • edit_update — edit a progress update you authored (HTML body)
  • get_project_people — list project members and roles
  • get_project_tags — list project tags (use IDs when tagging actions)
  • create_project_tag — create a new project tag (owner or editor)
  • list_notifications — your recent notifications
  • list_project_integrations — enabled integrations for a project (Azure DevOps, Basecamp, Jira)
  • link_action_integration — link an action to an external item by integration name and ID or URL (warns when the item is in a different mapped ADO/Jira project). Adds to existing links, up to 20 per integration

Your existing project roles apply. Viewers can read but not write. Creating, editing, archiving, and restoring projects requires Owner or Editor. Deleting a project requires Owner.

Action descriptions and updates

Descriptions and progress updates use HTML rich text (same as the web app). Use tags such as <p>, <strong>, <ul>, and <table> when creating or editing via MCP. Plain text without tags is wrapped automatically. Markdown is not supported. Read tools return HTML so assistants can round-trip formatting.

Claude Code

Run this once in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http actionlog https://www.actionlog.app/mcp

Claude Code will prompt you to log in on first use. After that, ask Claude anything about your projects and actions.

Claude Desktop

Open ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (macOS) or %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json (Windows) and add:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "actionlog": {
      "url": "https://www.actionlog.app/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Save and restart Claude Desktop. A browser window will open for login on first use.

VS Code (GitHub Copilot)

Open VS Code Settings and search for MCP, then click Edit in settings.json and add:

{
  "mcp": {
    "servers": {
      "actionlog": {
        "url": "https://www.actionlog.app/mcp"
      }
    }
  }
}

Reload VS Code. Copilot will prompt you to authenticate on first use.

Cursor

Open Cursor Settings → Tools & Integrations → MCP, click Add new MCP server, set the name to actionlog and the URL to https://www.actionlog.app/mcp, then save and reload.

ChatGPT

In a ChatGPT workspace that allows custom MCP servers, choose Add custom MCP server. Set the name to Action Log, the server URL to https://www.actionlog.app/mcp, and authentication to OAuth. Leave the advanced OAuth settings as discovered, confirm the custom server notice, and save.

ChatGPT opens the Action Log sign-in page the first time it connects.

Grok Bot

Add a remote MCP server with the URL https://www.actionlog.app/mcp. Grok Bot opens the Action Log sign-in page on first use.

Other MCP clients

Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can connect using the same URL. Action Log supports both dynamic client registration and client ID metadata documents, so there is nothing to register by hand.

Troubleshooting
  • Authentication failed or redirect loop — your token expired. Disconnect and reconnect the MCP server in your client to trigger a fresh login.
  • Tool calls return permission errors — your role on that project may not allow the operation. Viewers cannot create or update actions.
  • Connected but no projects appear — confirm you are logged in to the correct Action Log account.
  • redirect_uri is not allowed — usually means your MCP client uses a callback URL the server does not recognize. Cursor desktop uses cursor://anysphere.cursor-mcp/…; Cursor cloud agents (including Grok) use https://www.cursor.com/agents/mcp/oauth/callback. Cloud deployments are updated with supported prefixes; on self-hosted instances, add the client's prefix to Mcp__AllowedRedirectUriPrefixes.
