Importing projects

JSON and Excel formats accepted from the Import project flow.

Import creates a new active project from a file you exported from Action Log or prepared in Excel.

JSON

Use a full project JSON export from Action Log (Project options -> export). That preserves actions, tags, updates, and structure the app understands.

Excel

The importer expects a workbook with a Project sheet (key/value rows such as Name, Description, dates) and an Actions sheet with columns like Action, Status, Target Date, Responsible, Updates. Match the layout of an Action Log Excel export when possible.

There is no separate downloadable template in-app today. The easiest template is to export an existing project to Excel, then edit that workbook.

What is preserved
  • JSON exports preserve the most structure, including actions, updates, and project-level metadata.
  • Excel imports are best for bulk action capture and basic planning fields.
Import validation and errors

If the file shape or values are invalid, the import will stop and show an error. Common causes are missing required columns, unrecognized status values, or malformed dates.

Plan limits to check first

Import creates a new project. On Free, owned active projects are limited, so you may need to archive or remove an existing owned project before importing.

Start an import from Projects -> Import project.
