Basecamp integration

Connect Basecamp, map to a project, and link actions to to-dos or cards.

The Basecamp integration lets you create or link Basecamp to-dos and cards directly from an Action Log action, then keeps both sides in sync so your team always sees the latest status.

Setup works in three layers: an account connection, a per-project mapping, and then individual action links.

Recommended setup flow
  1. An account admin authorizes a Basecamp account at Account → Integrations → Basecamp. This creates a reusable connection scoped to all projects or a specific subset.
  2. From a project, open the Integrations page (project header menu) and click Configure on the Basecamp card. Select the connection, the default Basecamp project for new items, the default item type (to-do or card), and the default to-do list or card column.
  3. From an action, expand the Basecamp panel to create a linked item or paste a Basecamp URL to link an existing one.
Account connection

Connecting uses Basecamp's standard authorization flow. After authorizing, the connection appears in Account → Integrations → Basecamp where you can test, edit, or delete it. Each connection can be restricted to specific projects or made available to all.

Project mapping
  • Default item type: Choose whether new linked items are created as to-dos or cards. You can override this per action when creating a link.
  • Default list / column: The to-do list (for to-dos) or card column (for cards) used when creating new linked items. You can also override this when linking from an action.
Linking from an action
  • Create new: Action Log creates a new to-do or card in the default Basecamp project, using the action title as a starting point (an AI-suggested title is offered if available). You can pick a different Basecamp project, item type, and list or column before creating.
  • Link existing: Paste one or more Basecamp to-do or card URLs, or their IDs. The item can sit in any Basecamp project the connection can see. Each linked item shows its project. An action can link up to 20 Basecamp items.
  • Once linked, a Basecamp icon appears next to the action in table and kanban views so the team can see the link at a glance. With several linked items the icon shows a count; click it to see each one.
Sync behavior
  • Linked actions are checked hourly in the background. When Basecamp reports a change to the title, status, or assignees, an update is added to the action so your team sees what changed.
  • Sync notifications show the item's actual title (not just an ID) and correctly identify whether the item is a to-do or a card.
  • You can trigger a manual refresh from the Basecamp panel on an action at any time. If changes are detected, your team receives a notification.
  • If Basecamp can no longer return an item, the link stays on the action and is marked unavailable. Unlink it when you no longer need it.
  • Action Log does not change your Action Log action status based on Basecamp status. Your action statuses remain yours to manage.
Reconnect

On Account → Integrations, each Basecamp connection has Reconnect so you can re-authorize with 37signals without removing the connection. Mappings and action links stay in place when the authorized Basecamp account matches the existing connection.

Removing an account connection

Removing a Basecamp connection clears every project mapping and every Basecamp link on actions that used it. The Integrations page asks you to confirm first. OAuth tokens refresh automatically while the connection exists; remove the connection when you truly want to drop those links or switch accounts.

Troubleshooting checklist
  • If the Basecamp panel shows an error, verify the connection is still authorized at Account → Integrations → Basecamp and use Test connection.
  • If no connections appear on the project Integrations page, check that an account-level connection exists and is scoped to include your project.
  • If sync updates look stale, wait for the next hourly sync or use the manual refresh button on the action's Basecamp panel.
  • If item creation fails, confirm the selected Basecamp project and to-do list or card column are still accessible with the authorized account.
